Green flags: how to tell someone is genuinely serious

Everyone knows the red flags. Fewer people know what good actually looks like, which makes it easy to miss.

Most dating advice is a list of warnings. Useful, but it trains you to scan for danger and leaves you without a picture of what you are actually looking for. The result is people who can spot a bad match instantly and cannot tell a good one from a boring one.

Here is what genuine seriousness tends to look like. Almost all of it is unremarkable, which is exactly why it gets overlooked.

They are consistent

The clearest signal there is. They message at roughly the same rate week to week. They do not run hot for four days then vanish for five. You are not doing detective work to figure out where you stand.

Inconsistency is often mistaken for mystery or busyness. Mostly it means you are one option among several, or that the person is ambivalent and has not said so.

They plan ahead

Someone serious proposes things in the future: a specific day next week, an event next month, a plan that assumes you will still be around. Someone who is not serious lives entirely in the next forty-eight hours and only ever responds to plans you make.

They let you into their actual life

  • You meet their friends, at a normal point rather than after a year.
  • You know where they work, roughly what their week looks like, and the names of people in it.
  • They mention family, and eventually family knows you exist.
  • You are not confined to certain hours or certain places.

Being kept separate from someone's real life is one of the most reliable signs that you are not being taken seriously, whatever they say.

They can be disagreed with

This one is underrated. Have a small disagreement and watch what happens. Someone worth building with can hear that you are annoyed without punishing you for it, without going cold, and without turning it around so that you end up apologising.

How someone handles being slightly inconvenienced by you tells you more than how they behave when everything is easy.

They are curious about the unglamorous parts

Not just your job and your interests. Your family situation. What you are worried about. What you want your life to look like. People who are only interested in the enjoyable surface of you are usually enjoying the surface, and nothing more.

They talk about the future in plain language

Not fantasy about weddings in month one. Practical talk: where they want to live, whether they want children, what they are working towards. Someone serious has thought about their life and is willing to say what they concluded.

If you have not covered these yet, the questions to ask before getting serious is a good place to start.

They respect a no

Any no. About your time, your body, your money, your boundaries with family. Someone who accepts a small no gracefully is showing you how they will handle a large one. Someone who negotiates, sulks or keeps asking is also showing you, and you should believe them the first time.

Common questions

How long does it take to know if someone is serious?

Consistency needs time to be visible, so most people get a clear picture within about six to eight weeks. What you are watching for is whether behaviour stays steady once the novelty wears off.

Is moving slowly a bad sign?

Not at all. Slow and consistent is a good combination. What matters is whether things move forward at all, not how fast.

They say all the right things but I still feel uneasy. Why?

Usually because words and behaviour are not matching, and you have noticed before you could explain it. Look at consistency, planning and whether you have been let into their real life.
