How to tell if someone you met online is real

You do not need to be suspicious of everyone. You do need a few checks you run every time, before you get attached.

If you are asking whether someone is real, something has already made you pause. That instinct is worth taking seriously. It is usually not one big red flag. It is a small mismatch that your mind noticed before you could explain it.

Here is the useful part: verifying someone is quick, and it does not require accusing them of anything. Most of these checks take ten minutes and feel like normal conversation.

Start with a live video call

This is the single most effective check, and it is why anyone pretending to be someone else will avoid it. A short live call, with their face and their voice, rules out almost every form of impersonation at once.

Watch for the reasons given to avoid it. A broken camera is believable once. A broken camera for three weeks, alongside constant messaging, is not a technical problem. Neither is a call that always happens with the camera pointed at a ceiling, or one that cuts out the moment you ask them to wave.

Reverse search their photos

Save a photo from their profile and run it through a reverse image search on Google Images, Bing or TinEye. You are looking for the same face turning up under a different name, on a stock photo library, or on a modelling or fitness account belonging to somebody else.

A clean result is not proof of anything, because a stolen photo can be new to the internet. But a hit is close to conclusive, and it takes under a minute.

Look for the ordinary texture of a real life

Invented people are strangely frictionless. Real people have a job with an annoying colleague, a landlord, a bus route, a cousin who calls at bad times. Their photos have background: a real kitchen, real weather, other people who were not posed.

  • Do their photos span different times, places and haircuts, or do they all look like one shoot?
  • Do the details of their story stay the same when you circle back a week later?
  • Can they talk about their city in a way that would be hard to fake, like traffic, prices, or which area is a nightmare on a Friday?
  • Do they ever mention anything dull? Real life has admin in it.

Notice the speed of the feelings

Intensity is the tool, not the affection. Someone who is certain about you within days, uses the language of destiny early, and wants to move you off the app almost immediately is following a pattern. The rush exists because attachment is what makes the later request work.

Genuine interest can move quickly. It does not usually resist every small request to slow down.

The one rule that does the heavy lifting

Never send money to someone you have met online and not met in person. No exceptions for medical bills, flights, customs fees, visa costs, phone credit, a business opportunity or a temporary emergency. This one rule prevents the overwhelming majority of harm, even when every other check fails.

It also works as a test. Tell someone early and casually that you never send money to anyone you have not met. A genuine person will not mind. Someone working an angle often gets strange about it, or drifts away, which saves you months.

What to do if the checks fail

  1. Stop sending messages. You do not owe an explanation, and explaining gives them another chance to work on you.
  2. Screenshot everything before you block, including the profile and any payment details.
  3. Report the profile in the app you met on, so other people are protected.
  4. If money has already moved, contact your bank immediately and report it to the police or your national fraud line.

If money has changed hands, read what to do after a romance scam. The first few hours matter more than most people realise.

Common questions

Is it rude to ask someone to video call?

No. It is now a normal part of online dating, and most people expect it. Anyone who treats a short video call as an insult is telling you something useful.

What if they say they are shy about video?

Shyness is real, so offer an alternative: a short voice note, or a call with the camera off first. What matters is whether they move towards verification over time or keep finding new reasons to avoid it.

Can a scammer fake a video call?

It is possible with pre-recorded clips or manipulated video, which is why spontaneous requests help. Asking them to do something unplanned on camera is far harder to fake than simply appearing on screen.

They passed every check. Am I safe now?

You have confirmed they are a real person, which is different from confirming they are a safe or honest one. Keep the money rule, and take the usual precautions when you meet for the first time.
