Meeting an online match in person for the first time
Good planning is not paranoia. It is what lets you relax enough to actually enjoy the date.

The first meeting carries two jobs at once. You are finding out whether there is anything here, and you are meeting a stranger. Handle the second one properly in advance and the first one gets much easier, because you are not spending the evening quietly assessing your exits.
Before you go
- Have a live video call first. It confirms they look like their photos and takes most of the strangeness out of the first ten minutes.
- Tell someone you trust where you are going, who with, and when you expect to be home. Send them the person's profile.
- Share your live location with that person for the evening. Every major phone does this in two taps.
- Arrange your own transport there and back. Do not be dependent on them for how you get home.
- Keep your phone charged, and carry enough money to leave at any moment.
Choosing where to meet
Public, busy, and easy to leave. A cafe, a well known bar, a restaurant in an area you know. Daytime is easier for a first meeting than late at night, and a coffee that can become dinner is better than dinner that cannot become coffee.
Avoid, for a first meeting: their home, your home, a private room, a car journey out of town, or anywhere you would struggle to get away from without their help. This is not about assuming the worst. It is about not needing to.
While you are there
- Watch your drink being poured and keep it with you. Take it with you rather than leaving it at the table.
- Keep your address, your workplace and your daily routine vague for now. There is time.
- Notice how they treat staff. It is the most reliable free information you will get all evening.
- Pay attention to pressure of any kind, including pressure to drink more, to move on somewhere private, or to stay longer than you want to.
How to leave early, without drama
You are allowed to leave at any point, for any reason, including no reason. You do not owe anyone the rest of an evening because they bought you a coffee.
The simplest exit is the honest one: it was good to meet you, I am going to head off. If that feels too direct, an early start tomorrow works and nobody has ever questioned it. If you feel unsafe rather than just uninterested, tell a member of staff. Bar and restaurant staff deal with this often and will help you leave quietly.
Afterwards
Tell your friend you are home. If it went well, say so plainly rather than waiting a strategic three days. If it did not, a short message is kinder than silence, and you are allowed to send nothing at all if the person made you uncomfortable.
Common questions
How long should I talk online before meeting?
Long enough for a video call and a sense of who they are, short enough that you are not deeply attached to someone you have never met. A week or two of real conversation suits most people. Months of messaging without meeting is its own warning sign.
Should I share my live location on a first date?
With a trusted friend, yes. It costs nothing and it means someone knows where you are. Sharing it with your date is a different decision and there is no need to do it on a first meeting.
Is it safe to let them pick me up?
Not for a first meeting. Getting into a stranger's car hands over control of where you are going and when you can leave. Meet there, and leave under your own steam.
What if they get offended by my precautions?
Someone who is genuinely interested in you will understand precautions, and will often have their own. Being offended that you took sensible steps is information about them, not about you.
